The Unbelievable Simple Items That Make Packing And Moving Easier
By this point, you have probably read a ton of tips and tricks to make moving easier and they all say one of the most important things is to stay organized. Some common moving “hacks” often include things like a label maker, colored tape, organizing your boxes by color or number, the suggestions seem to go on and on.
Wow, staying organized sure seems complicated, But it doesn’t have to be!
After years of experience as commercial and residential movers in Maryland, DC, and Virginia, we have noticed that the more organizational tips people try to follow, the more stressed they often become. We feel that less is more and in this post we will share 4 common items that everyone already has in their home that are sure to make moving easier.
Let’s get right to it!
Marker
One Marker is all it takes and the color doesn’t matter at all. There is no need to go nuts with an intricate coding system. Just write the room that the box will go to in your new place, for example: “Kitchen.”
The trick is to write the label on every side of the box so you will be sure to see it. Also, you might want to have a spare marker just in case your first one dries up, but there is no need for a fancy label maker. On the other hand, if you enjoy organizing and labeling, then go for it
Plastic Wrap
Stock up on common plastic wrap that you can find in any grocery or home store and you will be good to go. There is no reason to pack and unpack clothes and other household items when you have a good supply of plastic wrap on hand.
The uses are endless, but here’s a few examples:
- Cover all bottles of liquid (shampoo, perfumes, etc.) before packing to avoid a potential mess.
- Wrap your drawers tight with everything still inside.
- Wrap your jewelry boxes to keep them sealed.
- Keep your silverware in the organizing tray and secure it with the plastic.
Zip Lock Bags
Little baggies are great to keep smaller items organized like earrings and other small jewelry. Plus, if you have to dismantle furniture and electronics this is a great way to keep track of all those loose screws bolts and chords. Don’t forget to use that marker we mentioned earlier to label the baggies.
Not only that…
When you pack up your kitchen, use the zip locks to hang onto some snacks for later. You will definitely need a little something handy to get you through the day.
Trash Bags
We can’t stress just how important large sturdy trash bags are when you move!
To start with, we strongly recommend throwing things away that you don’t want to bring to your new place. One of the best ways to quickly feel settled in your new home is to get rid of all unwanted things before you move in.
But that’s just part of it.
Trash bags are also great for moving clothes on hangers. That’s right, you don’t need to get your good clothes all wrinkled when you move. Keep everything on the hangers and bundle them up with a trash bag. Then, when you arrive at your new place just remove the bag and you’re good to go.
A Few More Common Household Items You Already Have That Also Make Moving Easier
- Scissors – cut holes in boxes to make them easier to carry
- Tape – to secure boxes
- Rubber bands – to bundle items together
- Toilet paper roll – to help organize cords, necklaces, etc.
