Moving & Packing Tips – Call us 24/7 at (301) 424-1410
Moving and packing can be an overwhelming endeavor, so I’d like to share with you some packing tips to make your move a little easier. At Jake’s Moving and Storage, we’ve been helping people in Maryland, Virginia, Washington D.C., and the surrounding areas move for over a decade and are experts in packing. By following some of these simple packing tips, you can make your move less stressful and reduce the chances of items being damaged during the move.
Get Organized
If you want to make sure that everything is done in an orderly fashion, nothing is missed, and nothing is packed incorrectly, you are going to want to put together a plan. Your plan should include which rooms or areas you are going to pack first, things that need to be cleaned or thrown out before the move, and items that cannot be packed until the last minute. Make sure your plan includes packing your infrequently used items first, and the more commonly used items last.
We also suggest that you obtain your packing supplies ahead of time, and to make sure that you have more than you need. This includes enough boxes to hold your belongings, clean print newspaper to wrap items in, bubble wrap, and packing tape to seal boxes. If you are not using professional movers, you will also need to obtain blankets for use when packing in the truck. Jake’s Moving and Storage provides all the packing supplies you will need for your move. We even offer junk removal for homes in MD, DC, and VA so you only have to pack what you intend on using or keeping.
Packing the Kitchen
Packing up the kitchen can be one of the more challenging and time consuming rooms in your home. The kitchen is filled with many breakable items that will need to be wrapped individually. When packing plates, bowls, mugs, and other similar items, make sure you are wrapping each piece individually. Place some clean newsprint or other packing material at the bottom of the box to provide additional cushioning. Place wrapped plates and serving dishes at the bottom of the box and make sure to fill any open spaces with crushed paper. Add a layer of crushed paper on top of the plates and place smaller items on top. Silverware can be wrapped in bundles and then packed.
Stemware is extremely fragile making it tough to pack. Wrap each piece of stemware individually and place paper into the goblet and wrap the stem generously. I suggest getting a tiered box specifically designed for stemware and glasses. This will help separate and protect your items.
Packing the Bedroom
The bedroom has less fragile items than the kitchen, but items like shoes and bedding can be bulky and difficult to pack. Shoes can be packed in a large carton or bin. You can obtain individual shoe boxes for each pair or wrap them for protection. Clothes should be folded neatly and boxed up. Clothes can be left on hangers if you obtain a wardrobe box. Jake’s Moving and Storage provides a wide range of boxes for your residential move.
When packing your bedding or your towels, get a lined carton or bin. Place items in the carton and separate them with packing paper. Doing so will keep your bedding clean and make unpacking more organized.
Packing Electronics
Electronics are often our most valuable items, and protecting them when moving is important. If you still have the original boxes it is best to use those. If you threw away the original boxes, don’t worry because you can still safely transport your electronics. Make sure that you are adding additional padding, such as bubble wrap or blankets, to the bottom of the box. Securely wrap the items and place them in the box, followed by additional packing materials on top.
I hope that the tips above on how to pack for moving will help you with your upcoming move.
